Gurutze Frades wins the IRONMAN Cozumel 2023

The city of Cozumel, Mexico has hosted a new edition of the IRONMAN Cozumel where the victory has been for Leon Chevalier and Gurutze Frades who has revalidated the title. 

The test was held with an altered format due to weather conditions, becoming only cycling and running.  

Among the participants, figures such as Sebastian Kienle stood out, in his last professional competition, or the Spanish Gurutze Frades, defending her title. 

Britain's Ruth Astle, known for her cycling strength, took the lead from the start. Gurutze Frades, wearing number 60, began his journey cautiously, initially maintaining a conservative position.  

Astle, showing her skill on the bicycle, extended her advantage over her pursuers, including the German Svenja Thoes and the Canadian Angela Naeth. 

As the cycling segment progressed, Astle continued to lead, but Frades began to make up positions. Guru was fifth at the time of T2. 

The marathon was the stage where Gurutze Frades shone with his own light. From kilometer 7, he began to climb positions. 

She overtook Angela Naeth and began to close the gap on Svenja Thoes, who was leading after Astle retired. 

Halfway through the marathon, Frades was already just 30 seconds behind Thoes. With a constant pace Frades caught up with and surpassed Thoes, taking the lead of the race. 

Finally, Gurutze Frades He crossed the finish line first, with a marathon time of 2:49:23, marking a total of 7:36:10.  

His victory was not only a triumph in the race, but also a demonstration of tactics and endurance. Svenja Thoes (7:43:03) came in second place, more than 6 minutes behind, and Marlene Helen de Boer (7:57:02) completed the podium.

In the men's category, the victory has gone to Leon chevalier with a time of 6: 42: 21, followed by Chris Leiferman (6: 52: 01) and robert wilkowiecki (6: 54: 27). 

Sebastian Kienle, in his last participation as a professional, finished in fourth position with a time of 6:54:41, remaining 12 minutes and 10 seconds behind the winner.

As for the Spanish Mikel Ugarte He was the best with ninth position, final. Victor Arroyo, another Spaniard in the test, finished in a creditable eleventh position.
