A Little History

The year 1996 was in the German city of Roth, when the German Lothar Leder he became the first triathlete to get down from 8h in an IRONMAN, his time in goal was 7: 57: 02 and thus entered the history of our sport.

A year later at 1997 in the same town, Roth, the fastest IRONMAN in history (1) was disputed with four triathletes coming down from 8horas. The winner the Belgian Luc Van Lierde broke the mark of the previous year leaving the best IRONMAN brand in 7: 50: 27.

At the end of 2015 it has been downloaded from 8h in IRONMAN 49 times (30 times in the last 5 years) being 33 the triathletes that have achieved it

Fourteen years later at the IRONMAN of Austria, the Belgian Marino Vanhoenacker beat the record of his compatriot Van Lierde with a time of 7: 45: 49 and established the best world record of an IRONMAN ... although the joy lasted little, since a few days later in Roth the German Andreas Realert pulverized the Marino brand by stopping the time in 7: 41: 33, which is to date the best worldwide brand of an IRONMAN.

It 2015

In this 2015 there have been several records of IRONMAN sub 8h: the year that more times has broken the 8h barrier a total of 11 times, also the year that more triathletes have achieved 10 in total, the first time that one triathlete does it twice Marino Vanhoenacker (Brazil and Austria) and the year that in more different places has been managed to come down from 8, in six scenarios: Brazil, Roth, Austria, Frankfurt, Busseltorn and Arizona.

The best in the history

By way of curiosity we will cite the best in each sector in the 49 times that has been downloaded from 8h in IRONMAN, the best time in swimming is from German Andreas Realert in the IRONMAN of Austria in 2013 that covered the 3,8km in 44: 25.

The best time in the 180km of cycling was done by the American Andrew Starykowicz with 4: 02: 17 in the Florida IRONMAN of 2013. For the last time the best marathon was made by the Canadian Peter Reaid in Roth'99 with 2: 35: 21.

The Spanish

We can not finish this article dedicated to the sub8h without naming the Spaniards who have achieved this feat, the first was Eneko Llanos in Arizona'11 with 7: 59: 38. Eneko himself repeated sub8 in Frankfurt'13 with 7: 59: 58. That same year in Florida Víctor del Corral it reduced the marks of Eneko, when marking 7: 53: 12 ... and finally in 2014 Ivan Raña achieved in Austria a time of 7: 48: 43, which is the 3ª best international brand of an IRONMAN.

(1) To affirm that it is the fastest in history, we base it on the fact that it is (together with Brazil 2015) that the most triathletes came down from 8h (four). In Brazil this 2015 the average time of the first four was 7: 56: 33 while in Roth'97 the average time was 7: 54: 02.

NOTE: When dealing with a topic such as the best brands in IRONMAN, we must always bear in mind that distances are not approved.
