Virginia Berasategui "I am going to resign from the Ironman circuit of Hawaii"

The palmares of Virginia Berasategui (Bilbao, 1975) is almost endless. The Spanish triathlete faces, at 37, her 23rd season in the elite, in the newspaper Marca.com they have conducted an interview explaining her change of objectives for this season.

"I'm going to give up the circuit Ironman of Hawaii. I've been 'Top 10' four times and I think I've done everything I had to do. I like long distance, but now it's true that I have other big projects in mind.

I have several personal proposals that I want to combine with World and European. Currently, with the new regulation, the Ironman has changed its philosophy. It is a brand that what it wants to do is joint circuits in which we have the athletes traveling only to their tests and going crazy. Also, in the end you do not know until the last moment if you are going or not going.

I like to think about the goal, but always enjoying the path. And in this way it is not possible. That's why I prefer to opt for other routes. I do not want to be told where I have to go"says Berasategui.

The one from Bilbao, who arrived at the triathlon after blunting from a very young age in athletics and swimming, wants to return all the confidence of her collaborators who are making their journey possible. "At the end everyone looks for theirs. 22 years I have given everything for the triathlon. During these last times I have obtained sponsors of my land and I want to overturn with the help that I have here. I want to support them, as a brand image or whatever, "says the Basque about some companies such as Spiuk, Bilbao City Council or Euskaltel." That's why I feel more than ever like to run the Bilbao Triathlon and enjoy with my people and my house".

In love with the slopes

Berasategui does not tire of running. Neither swim or peel. The march goes. The harder the better. "I love the slopes. I enjoy when the road bites up. Tests with this type of route are where I want to participate. I do not want to mold myself so much to others and I intend to run whatever I want. The hard part is not getting there. I did it to the 16 years and I follow my 37. I deserve to choose where I want to be"says the triathlete, who is proud of having stayed at the highest level for so many years.

Virginia, who would like to start a family in the near future, thinks that her sport is having an impressive dimension. "It is a discipline that is cheap and that combines several things. There is also a fever now because of the incredible Ironman. More and more we practice it. It's not like before, we were four cats"She congratulates herself, meanwhile, she continues training daily, enjoying the suffering, giving meaning to each hour of training, her objectives will change slightly this 2013, but her main idea will remain the same: honor the triathlon and do it surrounded by theirs.
