The text that was signed by more than 60 senators, aims to safeguard cyclists the "vulnerable road users."

As we read in the newspaper Iberobike, the Italian Senate have created a decree that will increase the penalty for drivers that do not respect the Normative of 1,5 meters of safety distance when overtaking a cyclist.

This measure was taken after the death of the professional cyclist Michele Scarponi. This 2658 bill called "salvaciclisti”Has reached the Senate in recent days and will be submitted to a committee for approval. If drivers who pass one or more cyclists with their car finally go ahead, they must maintain a minimum safety distance of at least 1,5 meters in order not to be penalized.

The penalty will be a minimum of 163 up to a maximum of 651 euros, with the consequent suspension of the license, which can last up to six months in the case of a new driver.

The intention of the decree is dramatically reduce the number of deaths on Italian roads, produced by the aggressive behavior of some motorists who overtake too often without taking into account the presence of bicycles.

According to the data of the report of the ISTAT, in Italy there are around 4 million cyclists, 250 are those who died as a result of an accident with a car and more than 16.000 were injured.

A great initiative in the step of avoiding more tragedies as they are happening on all European roads with cyclists.
