Alejandro Valverde will lead the Spanish Olympic team in Tokyo

Yesterday, the coach of the Spanish cycling team Pascual Momparler announced the components of the Spanish team that will participate in the Tokyo Olympics

Selected list

  • Alejandro Valverde
  • Ion Izaguirre
  • Gorka Izagirre
  • Omar friar
  • Jesus Herrada
  • Pello Bilbao (Reserve)

Online test

Alejandro Valverde, Ion Izagirre, Gorka Izagirre, Omar Fraile and Jesús Herrada will participate in the men's online test of the Games that will be played on Saturday, July 24

Individual time trial

In the individual time trial, which will be held on Wednesday, July 28, it will be disputed by Ion Izagirre.

"We wanted to build a team around Valverde with people who, in addition to being able to work and put themselves at the service of Alejandro, have the ability to get into cuts and finish.

We believe that given the few troops that each team will have, it will be a race with many alternatives and movements and this team gives us many options.

All of them are runners who have shown to perform well in one-day tests with more than 200 kilometers“, commented Pascual Momparler.

Fifth games for Valverde

Alejandro Valverde will add his 5th participation in the Olympic Games in Tokyo after having been with the Spanish team in Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016.

For Ion Izagirre it will be his second games since he participated in Rio 2016 in the online test and the individual time trial where he finished eighth.

For their part, for Gorka Izagirre, Omar Fraile and Jesús Herrada it will be their first participation in the Games.
