Video: The 2019 Giro will pay tribute to Da Vinci with legend rises

It will be one of the toughest Giro of the last editions, with mythical climbs, and a queen stage where will be promoted to the powerful Gavia and Mortirolo.

The route of the 102 edition of the Giro of Italia , was unveiled on Wednesday with an event organized in Milan, begin to y will conclude with two time trials: the first one Bologna, and the last one in Verona, with the finish line in the iconic Arena.

It will be a modern Giro, with three tests against the chrono, seven final high and the most demanding mountainous difficulties of the last years, whose presentation counted on the current champion, the British Chris Froome, who still did not clear the doubts about his effective participation.

Bologna, capital of the Emilia Romagna region, will be the theater of the start of a Giro that foresees some first stages without long climbs and that the third day will pass through the municipality of Vinci to pay tribute to Leonardo, on the 500 anniversary of his death.

The first part of the Giro will favor a priori the sprinters, with a route that Emilia Romagna will leave to move towards Tuscany and reach the Castelli Romani, a few hills outside of Rome (Lazio).

The runners will also pass through L'Aquila, in Abruzzo, when it will be ten years since the earthquake that shook the center of Italy in 2009, causing 309 dead and thousands of wounded.

After the first week and a completely flat stage between Ravenna and Modena, the mountainous difficulties will begin to take over the Giro.

Thus, the twelfth stage will run between the northern Cuneo and Pinerolo. The route will be short, with 146 kilometers, but very intense, with a double ascent to the Acaja Wall (20% slope) and climbing to the Montoso, a first class mountain pass.

This stage is dedicated to the Italian Fausto Coppi, who in 1949 was the protagonist of a historic solo escape, which allowed him to win the stage with more than eleven minutes ahead of his rival Gino Bartali.

The Giro will move to the north and the fourteenth stage will reach the Monte Blanco, with a stage between Saint Vincent and Courmayeur and 4.000 meters of altitude.

The climbs to Verrayes, Verrogne, Truc d'Arbe (Combes) and Colle San Carlo will be presented in rapid succession, which will require the maximum effort to the cyclists.

The second week of competition will conclude in Como, where a few weeks ago the Frenchman Thibaut Pinot was crowned in Il Lombardía, with some climbs to Colma de Sormano, although without the fearsome "Wall", Civiglio and San Fermo.

After a day of rest, the squad will move to Lovere for a stage that includes 5.700 vertical meters, including the climb to the Gavia, the Coppi top of this edition with its 2.618 meters in height, and the iconic Mortirolo.

The requirement of this stage was also highlighted by Froome, who reported that in recent times he was training in these areas.

The last mountain effort will be recorded in the penultimate stage, when the runners will tour the Dolomites, with climbs to the Cima Campo, Passo Manghen, Passo Rolle and final climb to Monte Avena, with a total drop of about 5.000 meters.

It will be the last occasion for the climbers to take advantage before the Giro finishes in Verona, with a time trial of 15.7 kilometers that will reward the champion in the arena, where the pink race did not close from 2010, when the Swede Gustav Larsson won.
