Berasategui starts the 2012 with the Ironman of South Africa
Virginia Berasategui begins her season this weekend with an important challenge, the Ironman from South Africa. With no time to adapt after the winter cross-country season, the Bilbao native is taking on the long distance with a clear objective: to get rid of the mandatory Ironman in order to compete in Hawaii in October, and thus be able to focus on the rest of the campaign's objectives.
Berasategui, after an autumn in which he underwent surgery to overcome his ailments caused by Morton's neuroma and a difficult winter, has held two concentrations in Fuerteventura that have helped him get ready for the first big test of 2012.
Her main rivals this weekend are the German Riesler and the British Swallow, who hopes to finish her first Ironman, since in previous attempts she had to abandon when she was in the lead due to injuries.
La competición se desarrollará en Hobie Beach (Port Elizabeth), sobre las distancias clásicas de 3,8 kilómetros de natación, 180 de bike and 42 in running.
After finishing the African event, Virginia Berasategui will return to the capital of Biscay, to take part in the first training sessions for the Bilbao Triathlon.
Later he will change registration to participate in the Titan Dessert, a MTB stage test in which he will join other well-known members of the GAES team, such as Marc Coma (Dakar motorcycle champion); Roberto Heras (winner of the last editions of the Titan) and the actor Santi Millán.
After returning from Morocco he will focus on preparing for the Bilbao Triathlon, a 70.3 in which he hopes to repeat the success he achieved last year, and in July he will appear on the horizon at the long distance World Championships held in Vitoria. This event and the Kona Ironman are his two main objectives of the current campaign.
