Typical swimming injuries

It is important to prevent taking special care with the technical gesture, respect the breaks and strengthen the area

Our collaborator in Physiotherapy Fisiopinar Clinic, tells us in this article which are the most typical injuries in swimming.

Although swimming is one of the lower impact physical activities, swimmers subject the joint to movements of great joint amplitude. Most injuries affect the shoulders, knees, and back.

Shoulder:

  • Shoulder instability: lThe joint capsule and ligaments do not fulfill their function of keeping the head of the humerus within the glenoid cavity.
  • Impigement or subacromial syndrome: Decreased subacromial space that causes pressure on the rotator cuff from the scapula as the arm is raised.
  • tendinitis bicipital : inflammation of the biceps humerus as it passes through the bicipital groove (anterior shoulder pain)

Knee :

In the breaststroke, a forceful kick is given with a forceful movement in which the knee joint is extended and rotated. This can lead to strained Internal Lateral Ligament and even meniscus problems and patellar tendonitis.

Back

Due to the hyperextension of the maintained lumbar spine, acute lumbalgias can occur and in some extremes, spondylolysis (fracture of the junction between the vertebral body and the joint area).

It is important to prevent taking special care with the technical gesture, respect the breaks and strengthen the area and in the event of minimal pain consult our trusted physiotherapist.
