The Mallorca 140.6 Triathlon, the only long-distance triathlon in the Balearic Islands, returns to Playa de Muro tomorrow

The second edition of the expected Mallorca 140.6 Triathlon it will be played again in Playa de Muro tomorrow Saturday from 8 am.

Been officially presented at the Hotel Viva Blue regarding the return to the Balearic Islands of the long-distance triathlon with the participation of about 400 athletes, of which practically 60% are foreign triathletes, and with a figure of more than 20% of female participation between the two distances that the competition consists of.

The official presentation ceremony was attended by Miguel Porquer, mayor of Wall; Margalida Ballester Bauza, second deputy mayor and councilor for Tourism; Guillem Mercadal, commercial director of Viva Hotels; david thompson, race director and manager of Kumulus (organiser), Ignacio Colom, president of the FETRIB; and the athletes Ivan Raña, former triathlon world champion and ambassador of the Mallorca 140.6 Triathlon, Claudia Striekwold, Ramón Ejeda and Ander Irigoyen, who are among the favorites to achieve victory.

2 distances

For the second year, the Mallorca 140.6 Triathlon consists of two distances, and receives this name from the total miles that they have to complete in the 'queen' category of the day and whose departure is at 8AM.

The triathletes will have to cover 3.800 meters of swimming, 180 kilometers of cycling and 42,2 kilometers of running, which add up to 140,6 total miles, which is equivalent to 226 kilometers.

The 'Half' competition corresponds to just half the distances in each of the disciplines (1.900 meters of swimming, 90 km of cycling and 21,1 of running).

The route is spectacular and very fast. It starts with the swimming segment in the crystal clear and calm waters of the Mediterranean in Playa de Muro, and continues with cycling through towns such as Muro, Santa Margalida, María de la Salut, Sineu, Llubí, Inca, Búger and Sa Pobla.

The foot race, after the second transition, takes place in the surroundings of S'Estany Gran, until the finish line in the Plaza del Ajuntament de Playa de Muro.

The first triathletes of the "half" distance will be crossing the finish line before 12 noon, and the first of the 140.6 distance around 16 pm, approximately.

level professionals

Among the cast of professionals who will fight for victory in the long distance, the names of the Balearic triathletes stand out Joan Nadal (second classified in the last edition) and main favorite also in 2022, and Carlos Lopez, who led the race last year until the foot race when he had to withdraw with physical problems.

He also repeats Basque Ander Irigoyen, third at the finish line in 2021, and who arrives in Mallorca in good shape.

The Spanish tri-armada completes it Ramón Ejeda, Carlos Aznar y Francisco Fernandez-Cortes.

Among the international professionals, the German stands out Marc Unger, Swedish Martin Strandlind y Dennis Anderson or the Polish Kacper Adam, who will also try to win.

In the female category, the Dutch Claudia Striekwold could be the great dominator in the Half distance, while the winner of the 140.6 distance of the last edition, Marion tuin, he will not be able to start because he is now recovering from physical problems that prevent him from defending his first place from last year.

10.000 € in prizes

The organization has arranged cash prizes for the first classified in the professional category of the 140.6 distance, which add up to a total of €10.000, and there is a fun cspecial category called “Vintage” for those triathletes who use bicycles and equipment from the 80s and 90s, as a tribute to the pioneers of this sport.

Among the singularities that make the Mallorca 140.6 unique is the exhaustive control of drafting (going to the wheel), which is totally prohibited in the cycling segment.

The Mallorca 140.6 Triathlon is organized by Kumulus, with the support of the Playa de Muro City Council, and with the support of the Tourism Strategy Agency of the Balearic Islands and the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Government of Spain.
