A triathlete dies in the IRONMAN 70.3 World Cup in Finland 

El IRONMAN World Championship 70.3 is being held this weekend in the city of Lahti, Finland, and unfortunately it has been the scene of tragic news.

A triathlete has lost her life during the competition.  

According to the official IRONMAN statement, the athlete was pulled out of the water approximately halfway through the swim and, despite medical efforts, sadly passed away.  

This event has left a shadow over the event, which has also witnessed outstanding sporting performances. 

This is the organization's statement 

"On a day meant to celebrate the spirit and achievements of our IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship athletes, we are devastated to share the passing of one of our racing competitors.  

The athlete was pulled from the water approximately halfway through the swim, received immediate medical assistance from water safety first responders, and continued to receive treatment on shore by emergency personnel, including two event medics. 

 Despite all medical efforts, the athlete passed away. Our thoughts and care are with the athlete's family and friends, whom we will continue to support as they go through this difficult time.  

We also have a big thank you for the medical and safety teams who worked quickly to provide the athlete with medical support.. " 

 

Taylor Knibb shines in Lahti 

Despite the sad incident, the competition continued and Taylor Knibb rose with the victory in the female category, revalidating her title from the previous year. 

With a time of 3:53:02, Knibb demonstrated her mastery of the discipline, closely followed by Kat Matthews and Imogen Simmonds.  

Today the women's elite test and the age group test were held.  Tomorrow will be the turn of the men's test.
