The two athletes who died in the swimming area of ​​Ironman South Africa have been identified

The deceased were called Leon Stanvliet, of 63 years, of George, and Andre Trichardt, of 58 years, of Durban, according to the Citizen newspaper

Officials at the scene commented that Stanvliet had seizures during swimming and it is believed that Trichardt had a problem related to the heart during swimming.

Both were taken out of the water by the rescuers and attempts to revive them failed.

The police spokesman, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, confirmed that both incidents occurred with a difference of 10 minutes and that both were declared dead when they arrived at the hospital.

"At this stage we are waiting for postmortem results to determine the exact causes of death. It is not believed that foul play is part of the incidents and the two investigation cases are being investigated "He said.

Ironman SA spokesperson Siya Ndzimande said: “With great sadness we confirm the death of two participants of the race in the African Ironman Championship.   Both athletes needed medical attention during the swim part of Sunday's race and were taken to a nearby hospital where they were treated. "
