Looking for a star: Carlos Galisteo Velasco

This week Felipe Gutiérrez interviews a new promise of the Carlos Galisteo triathlon

The truth is that when I went to see Carlos I thought I would find a triathlete sunk by his injury and instead I found a kid who wants to recover soon and be in the elite of his category and if he can soon in the national elite.

His "training weapon" at the moment are his two crutches that he uses to not support the foot and thus gradually improve in the recovery of his stress fracture in the fibula.

It has 19 years completed in February and is the second year in the CAR of Madrid, this year of external, so what to go and return home every day little by little takes it better. His 1,89 of stature gives him an image of triathlete with enormous possibilities.

On Facebook, 341 has "friends" and we share 73, a good "thermometer" to see where we are going.

TN- How is it that, being from Madrid, you run with a Galician team?

CG- The first years I went to El Cid in Madrid and the second year I joined the Dexter Triathlon Compostela, which is now called David Triathlon Compostela Workshops. The secret is that I spent a year sharing the room with Andrés Cendán and since I was from that club, I went with them.

TN- With your 1,89 did you not play basketball?

CG- No, but I just like to see it.

TN- Now you're injured and that's hard ...

CG- Yes, in the Duathlon Spain Championship I had to retire because I had a stress fracture in the fibula. The week before I noticed discomfort and already in the race it hurt a lot. It was in the first race, I was good among the group in the lead and in the kilometer or so 4 I had to retire.

TN- You went to that championship with the intention of being among the best?

CG- At the beginning of the race I thought that an 5 top would be very good, even top 10, but when I saw myself in front I thought that I could even win. It was very good, it was a hard championship and there were a lot of good people.

TN- What memories do you have when you were little and did sports? How did you start?

CG- From a very young age my parents pointed me to swimming lessons in the Canoe and then I signed for San Blas, which was closer to home. I started competing and then I entered the Technification Center of the Madrilenian Federation and stayed until the 16 years.

TN- And how do you start with triathlon?

CG- I tried to do some triathlon and how it went well and I liked it more than swimming because I changed. My coach Santiago Veiga told me if I wanted to try it because in the preseason we did a running race and I was pretty good at it. I tried and wanted to continue ...

TN- What was your first triathlon, remember?

CG- Yes, it was at the Casa de Campo in sprint and I remember it as very hard, but very beautiful and I also did it with mountain bike.

TN- There you got hooked and went to Club El Cid

CG- Yes, Iñaki, being the Technical Director of the Madrilenian Federation, offered me the possibility of going to the club.

TN- The 2015 has started with "bad paw". What do you expect from what remains?

CG- After this unexpected injury, I would like to get to the Spanish Triathlon Championship well, although there is little left and the injury will take. I would like to qualify for the European and World Championship but it will be very difficult and I would like to do some qualifying for the Spanish Elite Championship later, qualify and also run a European Cup.

Before I did the Quarteira European Cup, in my first European Junior Cup and although it was not bad, I had some details that definitely need to be improved. I was the 16º, but in the transitions I have to get better.

TN- You say the injury will take, what do the doctors say?

CG- When I was diagnosed with the fracture they told me about six weeks. Now in the first weeks I am doing only gym and in two weeks I may start swimming with pull and my feet tied.

TN- What are you studying now?

CG- I am doing the career of Human Nutrition and Dietetics in the Complutense. I want to focus mainly on sport.

TN- Do you think that athletes eat badly in general?

CG- In general they do not eat badly, but it could be improved. You have to eat everything but in moderation.

TN- Being in the CAR is not something very hard?

CG- At the beginning of the season it cost me more to be external, last year I was internal and it was easier. I'm getting used to it and I'm taking the routine and everything goes better.

TN- And your family that says to you ?, with the displacements, with the injury ...

CG- My family supports me at all times the decisions I make.

Carlos Galisteo

TN- But ... What do you like about being here?

CG- I like the pace of training that there is and the group is worth it.

TN- Do you also have in mind the JJ.OO ?. Would you like to be in ones?

CG- I believe that it is always in the minds of athletes who aspire to something great and it would also be my dream. Maybe in 2020 or 2024… there are 5 years left.

TN- What is more and what you like least in training?

CG- Generally what I like the most are the bike sessions and the race on the track and the least the long shootings that are the most boring to me.

TN- Would you like to do other sports?

CG- Yes, I would like to do some mountain bike or something related to motorsport, like the 1 formula.

TN- How do you see your future in triathlon?

CG- In addition to having the Olympics in mind, although at the moment I think about the very near future, maybe next year and what's left of this, I'll leave it there ...

TN- Do you have any help, any sponsor that bets for you?

CG- At the moment the club and my parents.

TN- Who would you like to thank for being here now?

CG- Above all I would like to thank my parents who from childhood took me to the swimming school and where many of the days I was crying because I did not want to swim, I would have 4, 5 or 6 years, my parents forced me to go and now I I appreciate it because it is what I like most now.

Also to the San Blas club, which is where I have been for a lifetime and to David Triathlon Compostela Workshops, which is where I am and very comfortable and that treat me very well.

Carlos aspires to be in the European Championship, he has doubts about whether he will arrive, but he struggles to be encouraged every day and be able to be in that selection that is what he is really looking forward to. In the group they call him "the dragon" because of how big it is, surely Benito has something to do with it.

He continues with his recovery and watching how his teammates train, Carlos already wants to be IN THE LINE OF DEPARTURE.
